Brodick Castle
(Sights & Activities - Historic Sites)
Brodick
Glasgow UK
177-030-2202
Description:
This majestic castle on the Isle of Arran was once a Viking fortress. A restoration in the 1700's made it home to the Duke of Hamilton, and the impressive grounds and ornate Victorian rooms exude history. Robert the Bruce spent time as a prisoner in a cell here. Take a ferry from Ardrossan, near Glasgow, and explore this lovely island with its wildlife, ponds, waterfalls, and winding trails and stop at the Brodick for photos, history, and an elegant cup of tea in the tearoom.

Burns National Heritage Park
(Sights & Activities - Historic Sites)
Murdoch's Ln
Ayrshire UK KA7 4PQ
129-244-3700
Description:
Known as Scotland's Bard, this park pays homage to the great writer Robert Burns with a cottage, a museum, and a monument. Spend a day examining his life in the late 1700's and early 1800's, view original manuscripts, and browse the gift shop for souvenirs. Walk through the gardens to reach the Grecian monument, which offers fine views of the Brig O'Doon, which Burns made famous in his piece "Tam O'Shanter." End on a modern note with the Tam O'Shanter Experience, the famous tale brought to life on three multimedia screens.

Finlaystone Estate
(Sights & Activities - Historic Sites)
Langbank
Paisley UK PA14 6TJ
475-554-0505
Description:
This historic mansion is about 20 miles from the city center and is surrounded by scenic woods and hills. The views of the river and grounds are rewarding, but the learning experience is held within the walls, where you can glimpse life during the Victorian era. See a working kitchen, laundry and conservatory, and have a cup of tea in the old-fashioned tearoom. The visitor's center includes a variety of displays on art and history and an extensive doll collection.

Glasgow Cathedral
(Sights & Activities - Historic Sites)

Glasgow UK G4 0QZ

Description:
At first glance, you know this church has played a key role in history since medieval times. This is in fact the oldest medieval church in Scotland, founded by St. Mungo in 543 AD. It has been rebuilt several times but sections still remain from the 12th century. Outside, the Old Churchyard has a haunting medieval ambience. Inside, don't miss the carvings, memorials, or the crypt of St. Mungo in the lower church.

Glasgow Necropolis
(Sights & Activities - Historic Sites)
50 Cathedral Square
Glasgow UK G4
141-552-3145
Description:
This large, evocative cemetery is the final resting place for many of Glasgow's most revered dignitaries and famous citizens. With its hilltop views and position next to the River Clyde, this is one of the loveliest sights in the area. The obelisk for John Knox juts higher than the rest at 200 feet. Also, look for the Bridge of Sighs, named for all of the mourners who have traversed it.
